Lesson IX 01-18 Vintage 4-Patch and Floating Star

This beginner’s quilt project features two simple blocks: 4-Patch and Floating Star. A variety of prints, light to medium in tone, will be used for the 4-Patches and the corners on the Floating Star block. A dark contrasting fabric will be used for the foundation of the Floating Star and for the border and binding.

Instructions are given for two sizes (not including borders): 30″ x 40″ and 40″ x 50″. The smaller size will use 48 blocks total (24 of the 4-Patch and 24 of Floating Star.) The larger size will be made from 80 blocks ( 40 of the 4-Patch and 40 of Floating Star.)

I’ve made a video demonstrating what I call the “Quilt as You Go, Row by Row” method. It’s about 17 minutes long and I take you through the process step by step. Click to Watch the Video.

The photo below shows an example of the finished larger quilt, which was featured in American Patchwork & Quilting, February 2007 Issue/ Designer Darlene Zimmerman.
