Step Three

This entry is part 4 of 8 in the Quilting Project Series
Section three is the most complex part of this quilt. There is a large feature panel for placement of a Christmas tree, two small blocks which can be used to include a star or two in the design, a slightly larger block for another star or motif as desired, and two rectangles of BG fabric.

Use BG3 for the large panel. If doing an appliqued tree, the BG finished measure is 12″ x 10″ (24″ x 20″). Applique a tree motif of your choice. In the quilt shown here, I designed a patchwork tree using squares and half-square triangles, using an assortment of green prints. A red print 1″ (2″) border was added to bring the panel up to the required measurements.

Make two small blocks, 3″ x 3″ (6″ x 6″)using a star design of your choice. I made one Twin Star block on BG1 and a nine-patch for the second block. A larger block, 4″ x 4″ (8″ x 8″) can be used for another star. I made a wreath block, with a red bow to be added later.

Two rectangles are needed: BG1: 2″ x 4″ (4″ x 8″) and BG2: 3″ x 6″ (6″ x 12″)

Arrange the blocks as shown in the last photo on this page.
