Lessons I-VII and Quilting Archives

Step Seven

This entry is part 8 of 8 in the Quilting Project Series
Section 7 involves attaching outer borders, adding color as well as dimension to the quilt. I added a 3 inch border to the smaller quilt, using a dark green print which appears in a few of the patchwork blocks.

Cut two 3 1/2″ x 27 1/4″ and two 3 1/2″ x 28 1/4″ strips of the border fabric. Sew the border to the upper and lower edges of the quilt, trim evenly. Finally, sew borders to the sides and trim evenly, squaring off the corners neatly.

If adding borders to the larger quilt, cut 6 1/2″ strips, finishing to a 6″ wide border.

All that remains is to cut your batting and backing to size, approximately 3″-4″ larger than the quilt top on all sides. Layer the quilt, placing the backing wrong side up on a smooth surface. Use masking tape to secure the backing to the surface. Now place the batting on top of the backing and then add the quilt top, right side up. Pin through all three layers, with pins at about 4″-5″ spacing.

Now it’s time to quilt as desired and then bind your quilt.
