X Step Two: Bookcase Quilt

SHARE FABRIC CHOICES, “Book” strip units to exchange, etc.

NOTE: If you plan to add any trims to the individual “Book” strips, do so before joining them together.

Making Book Units:
HORIZONTAL STACK of BOOKS: Select several Book strips that you wish to “stack”. Sew together, with largest, longest book on the bottom and progressively shorter books toward the top of the stack. Keep the right (or left) edge of the colored strips lined up, with the BG color to the left (or right). Stack to desired height, about 5”-6”. Trim the two side edges. Add a BG strip to the upper edge to result in a unit that is about one inch taller than the shelf it is planned for. ( I found that working on a “unit” that measures about 11 ½” square works well. It can be trimmed to a smaller size later as needed.)

VERTICAL (Standing) BOOKS: Select several book strips and sew together side-by-side, having the lower edges even. Plan for a height that will fit into one of the shelves: the top 2 shelves will measure 9″ high, so plan for an unfinished piece about 10″ in height. For the lower 2 shelves, plan for an unfinished piece about 11″ / 12″ in height. Trim upper edge of the joined strips. ( I found that working on a “unit” that measures about 11 ½” square works well. It can be trimmed to a smaller size later as needed.)

NEXT WEEK: Bring in book units completed so far.
