## VIII Step Two

## SASH

Instructions are given for the Sashed Half Hexi Quilt first, then the Tube Quilt.

HEXI QUILT: You will be making a “braid” pattern from the sashed hexis. Start by placing two of the hexi unit as shown in the first photo, and sew the seam ( 1/4″ seam allowance). Open out and press, then add a third hexi to the top of the unit as shown. Continue to add hexi units to make a braided pattern until you have enough to be able to cut a square block. This will probably take 6 or 7 hexis. Measure width of strip (7 1/2″) and square to that measurement. Continue to add hexis to the remainder of the braid you just cut and make another block. NOTE: Do NOT make a big long braid and then cut it up–it tends to get “off center” if you do this.

The blocks finish to 7″. There will be a 1″ sashing between blocks and also between the rows, a 1″ narrow border and then a 3″ wider border. To make a quilt of about 31″x 39″, you will need to make 12 blocks, arranged 3 across and 4 down. Make 20 blocks arranged 4×5 and the quilt will be about 39″ x 47″.

TUBE QUILT: Each tube will make 8 or 9 units. 8 units will make 2 of the larger (10″) blocks. For an arrangement of 3×4 of the larger blocks you will need to make 6 tubes. For a quilt with 20 of the larger blocks, make 10 tubes. Sew Fabric A to Fabric B; next, sew Fabric C strip to the A/B unit, right sides together, sewing down both long sides to make a tube.

Press the tubes flat. Use your square ruler with 90 degree line marked as shown in the photos and cut the tube into triangular units. You will get 8 or 9 units from each tube; 8 units will make 2 of the larger blocks. Press each unit open. You will have 5 1/2″ blocks with two different color arrangements.

The photos on the right show two different color schemes for the tube quilt, with the aqua/purple version being cut into the triangular units. Place the 90 degree line of the square ruler on the lower seamline of the tube and cut along the edge of the ruler to make the right edge of the triangle. Then slide the ruler upwards so that the 90 degree line is now on the upper seamline and the cut to be made at the edge of the ruler will form a point at the top of the triangle. Continue to cut the tube into triangular units in this manner.
